Manual Labour is considered those tasks that enable a person to lift, load, carry or make any kind of movement using the body’s strength. Though most of the tasks are done by manual labor, it has been found that in the year 2028, almost 507,000 people were diagnosed with work-related musculoskeletal (MSK) disorder.
Though 83% of those 0.5million cases were seen to be only affected at the upper limbs, neck, or back, it has been revealed that due to the awkward positioning, mishandling of the heavy loads and repetitive actions could lead to permanent issues.
To make sure that risks are reduced and the work’s effectiveness is maintained, one has to create awareness among those laborers about the significant five P’s of manual handling training.
The five P’s of manual handling training:
The inclusion of manual handling training to the wider group of people who do the ‘heavy work’ in the industry has created importance. The incorporation of the training is to create awareness about the risk and how to mitigate that. Through the incorporation of the five P’s, you will find yourself less injured.
Always plan the oath you will be taking to deliver the object. It is always wise to stop midway to give your body a stretch. You have to ensure that you do not lift anything more than 25kg. Most of the items come with weight written on it. So ensure that you use the weight guide to carry them professionally.
Getting in the right position to hoist the object is the right thing to do. To dissipate your body’s weight evenly, you have to spread your legs at least to your shoulder length apart and start lowering your body to meet the center before proceeding with hoisting the object. To get the right grip, use some handlers.
In manual handling training, you will be taught to keep the motion natural. You have to ensure that the weight is resting on your spine while keeping the torso’s muscles engaged. It will stabilize the spine. Maintain an even breath while letting your hand and leg do the heavy work. With your torso aligned with your legs, it will become easy to lift things.
You need to maintain that you need to avoid twisting your spine while carrying heavy objects. You can move in a new direction using your leg rather than twisting your spine or torso. Also, ensure that the object does not block your views.
After reaching the destination point, you have to easily lower it up exactly the opposite of how you picked it up. A deliberate motion needs to be managed so as not to be faced with a critical injury.
Creating awareness by engaging in manual handling training will decrease the chances of acquiring risks to your body. Any kind of manual labor that includes lifting, carrying, or managing heavy loads deserves help not to receive further damage.
